Natalia thought about if for a moment, then sadly shook her head. “I don’t know. Any time we had an argument or didn’t talk for a while, I was the one to reach out.”

He stared at her for a moment. “Look, Nat. I know this sucks, but you did the right thing.”

“Doesn’t make it hurt any less.”

“Yep. It was Rebecca.” He paused as a memory inserted itself. “She looked really familiar, too, and not just because I had been dreaming about her.” He grew quiet, and she let him. “I found out later she was Daniel’s niece. Remember him?”

Vincent closed the door tightly behind him and continued to the main staircase. A very wealthy San Franciscan built the house in the late 1800’s. Vincent acquired it in the early 1900’s and made repairs and renovations to most of the house and restored the grand marble staircase. He enjoyed walking down a large sweeping marble staircase. It made for a grand entrance. Reaching ground level, he turned right walked a few steps and turned right again, walking beside then under the staircase.

Vincent turned to the window and watched the wind move through the trees. The glare from the lights in the room only slightly hindered his sight. He drew a deep breath, letting it out slowly. “It’s obvious you never truly understood the loyalty of your family.” Vincent turned, sat on the window’s edge and looked toward the map over his desk. The map was so old it still showed where the world stopped, stating ‘Hic Sunt Dracones’. He folded his arms, then regarded Carlos. “Do you not understand how easy it would have been for your family to end the debt without repaying it?”

“Oh, wow.” The kitchen was half the size of her house. There was an island in the center, which held a double sink and a cutting board surface. There were two ovens and two refrigerators. There were countless cupboards and most of the countertops were marble. The glass front cupboards revealed china for any occasion. Charlie led her to one of the stools and helped her to sit. She was entranced.

Vincent woke from a dream feeling completely unsatisfied. There was a knock on the door, but it was coming from the wrong direction again. He came more fully awake and realized he was still at the cabin. Annoyance seized his features as the body next to him stirred. He had accepted Mierka’s presence both nights while here, to try and assuage his hunger for Natalia. It worked, but not as well as he had hoped.

Natalia shoved her memories aside and turned her attention back to her notebook. The tablet was encrypted; only she knew how to open it. Even if someone did get it open, they wouldn’t be able to read any of it. She had a B.S. in Computer Science, a minor in Romance Languages. She currently worked for a game company part time, writing code for games. Using her skills, she had hacked her tablet and programmed it in a mixture of Latin, Romanian and French. She could read everything easily, but no one else could.

That’s where the Slayers came in. They were sent by God to hold back the monsters. Most times, Slayers killed the monsters outright, even if there were humans around. Natalia didn’t agree with that. She felt there was a better way. She found she could approach most vampires if she were careful. Sometimes, she could approach werewolves, but they were trickier. Too close to the full moon, their rage was just under the surface. She rubbed her shoulder as the memory of Charlie’s betrayal came back to her.

Vincent sipped from the goblet of blood, wishing it were fresh. Fresh blood would take the edge off his anger at Edwin. The blood used for his parties were taken from willing humans and stored in a small refrigerator in his office. The vampires who drank the stored blood couldn’t receive sustenance from it, but they could still enjoy the taste. It helped relieve the fact that there were no human guests allowed in this part of the club for feeding purposes. His rules. Vincent wanted to keep his fellow vampires from killing anyone in the club. It was bad for business. Half the wait staff was human, but they were off limits. Joseph taught them how to stop vampires and other monsters before letting them work in the private room.

Edwin did not wait for a response but left the girl and took his bodyguard. Vincent watched them leave for a moment, a little baffled by the fact that Edwin seemed to relish the fact that he was not the actual Captain. He shook his head then realized: as long as Christopher was alive, no one could kill Edwin for the title, unless they were next in line. The next in line was doing everything she could to ingratiate herself with Edwin. The rest of them were watching their backs or getting killed systematically. Until Christopher returned and took his title back, Vincent would have to leave Edwin alone.
