Daily Prompt: Genie

The din tore down the beach like a great beast in heat. – from The Grey House, Book One

Doesn’t seem like the word genie is there, does it? It is.

When I write, the words usually flow out. I hardly ever craft a sentence to make sure the right feelings are conveyed. The sentence above started out as either “the noise tore down” or “the cry tore down”. It wasn’t, to me, enough.

This sentence represents Natalia’s turning point; This is the moment she decides to follow her desires and be with a vampire, even though she is hunting another vampire. It had to have impact, even if only to me.

I used the thesaurus to find other words that meant ‘cry’ and ‘noise’ and found the word ‘din’. I have heard the word before, probably used it too, but it’s not common. When I read it, I remembered, or thought I remembered that there was a word that meant ‘genie’ that was vaguely like the word ‘din’.  Due to the rest of the sentence, “great beast in heat”, I knew I had to find out if the word existed.

The word is djinn.

To me, the noise that Natalia makes when she yells her frustrations are akin to a genie being released from a bottle after millennia. It’s one of my favorite sentences in the entire trilogy.

Daily Prompt: Crank

via Daily Prompt: Crank

I used to have junk cars that broke down a lot. Friends used to fix up the cars for me and tell me what was wrong with them. This is why I know what a crankshaft is.

That’s all I have.

Daily Prompt: Song

via Daily Prompt: Song

From The Grey House, Book One:

Not wanting to be beaten yet again, Natalia gritted her teeth. If only Bethany wasn’t in danger… but Vincent was taking care of that; she had to play along until the vampire could act. Natalia, her mother’s face swimming before her, reached around her neck to the clasp. Sighing, she undid the clasp but didn’t move her hands. The necklace had been around her neck since age ten. She still remembered the day her mom showed her how to make it and the songs she needed to sing to weave her will into the beads. She felt something unwinding in her head. Natalia suspected it might be the control she had over the people she hypnotized.

Daily Prompt: Deplete

via Daily Prompt: Deplete

The only usage of the word ‘deplete’ is from Riding the Maze, which was published in my short story collection, Enter the Maze. You can find that on Amazon here

Once in the house, they locked all the doors and windows and found the attic. They hunkered down and waited for night. Due to the lights and small quakes earlier, Peter suspected things were landing nearby. It was best to get inside and stay out of sight. He didn’t want to deplete their supplies this close to the end of the journey.

Daily Prompt: Glimmer

via Daily Prompt: Glimmer

When I see the Daily Prompt, sometimes I know I have never used the word before, sometimes I’m not sure and sometimes, I know I have used the word in my works. Sometimes I’m wrong, but not today. I saw ‘glimmer’ and knew I had a paragraph to share. Here it is, from The Grey House, Book Two, Inside the Grey House:

“No.” Vincent stopped pacing, a glimmer of a memory in his eye. He turned quickly to Joseph. “She isn’t ready.” He was at his desk, shaking the invitation at Joseph in less then a second. “She only knows how to fight in comfortable clothing. And if she arrives at Edwin’s function in anything but eveningwear, she’ll be turned away. She’s never fought in an evening gown and heels.” Vincent hit the invitation against Joseph’s chest with each word as he finished his tirade. “She’s.” Thwack. “Not.” Thwack. “Ready.” Thwack.

Daily Prompt: Froth

via Daily Prompt: Froth

This is from The Grey House, Book Three, Protector of the Grey House:

The father took a cross out of his suit and flashed it before her. He started frothing scripture. The words ran together and became unknowable. Natalia simply yawned, watched as her people got into position. The werewolves were still human, but Rebecca was grinning with anticipation, yellow eyes blazing. Charlie looked ready to launch himself at the priest, and two of the humans had stepped up behind Natalia, flanking her. Their guns were not yet visible, but their hands were at the ready. Natalia did not want to risk a fight in such small of a space. She turned her attention to Ashley.

Daily Prompt: Luminescent

via Daily Prompt: Luminescent

Not really surprised by this, but I have not  used ‘luminescent’ in my works. I tried ‘glow’ and ‘bright’ but the results weren’t what I wanted to share. Therefore, I am taking liberties and giving you a tiny paragraph from The Grey House, Book Two, Inside the Grey House with the word ‘glowering’. Yes, I connected the dots and made it work:

Vincent came back to himself and stood. He helped Lilly to her feet, thanking her for her help. He waved her away and turned back to Anthony, who stood glowering at the bottom of the steps.

Daily Prompt: Rush

via Daily Prompt: Rush

From The Grey House, Book Two, Inside the Grey House:

There was a rush of activity in the house as Vincent came in from the garage. He carried about him an aura that announced to his people that he would not be stopped. His suit was wrinkled, his brow furrowed. His long legs carried him quickly along his path and his hands were fists at his side.
