Daily Prompt: Shadow

From The Grey House:

Vampire hunters consisted mostly of the relatives of the tortured and murdered children who were looking for justice or revenge or both. The Slayers, against better judgment, Natalia thought, decided to take along these humans on vampire hunts. These humans didn’t have the abilities the Slayers did and died a lot quicker. The Slayers in the area didn’t seem to care too much about them and used them almost as cannon fodder. The whole situation disgusted Natalia, who believed humans should be kept out of the shadows and protected.

Daily Prompt: Thank

From The Grey House:

“I have been trapped here for an unknown amount of time. If you think you can stop me from going home, you are tangling with the wrong woman. I’ll walk if I have to.”

As Vincent stared up at her in disbelief, Mierka laughed. Everyone looked to her as Vincent stood. He glared at Mierka.

“Natalia has a point, Vincent. She needs time to heal. And maybe you need time to get a healer.” Mierka’s smirk could be heard in her words.

Natalia looked to the woman. “Thank you.”

Mierka nodded to her then went back to staring at Vincent.

“Fine.” His teeth were clenched. Vincent turned back to Natalia. “Charlie will drive you home,” he looked to Charlie, “but he will stop at my estates to drop off the van and use another car to drive you home. I want the books and artifacts unloaded tonight, not on a city street. You will stay with her and guard her until she comes to my estates.”

Daily Prompt: Innocent

From The Grey House:

She also learned that no one was truly innocent. Everyone had their good and evil sides; it was just a matter of perspective. Natalia sighed as she adjusted the napkin at her shoulder, cursing the vampire for the bite wound. Before she arrived home, she threw the napkin out the window. She knew what Vincent’s money was invested in and wouldn’t put it past him or his men to bug her. They wanted information on her; they would have to try harder.

Daily Prompt: Hurl

From The Grey House:

There was shouting behind her but she hardly heard it. There was a deafening roar and something hit her back. She tensed as claws penetrated her shirt and skin. She felt teeth on her neck and stopped struggling. The woman was a werewolf. The look in her eye had been that of barely suppressed rage. The raging beast had thankfully decided to pounce on her as a wolf, and had her snout around her neck, pressing softly, not breaking skin. It was wolf claws penetrating her skin and not foot long Blitzkrieg claws buried deep within her body. Natalia had time to wonder, as hands grabbed her arms and the snout let go and the claws pulled away, how the woman controlled herself so well. The thought was hurled from her mind as she was slammed against the side of the steps. Her vision sparkled, and she nearly passed out.

Through her tunnel vision Natalia made out the shapes of four Blitzkriegs forming a barrier between her and the Slayers. One of her guards picked her up and calmly walked up the steps as the werewolves faced off the Slayers. She went limp and passed out.

Daily Prompt: Feature

From The Grey House:

His hand went to her necklace, touching it lightly, then dropping to his side. “This is not a part of your new life Natalie. It is a trapping of your old life. You must leave it all behind, Natalie, or you will not be able to accept God into your heart.”

Natalia touched her necklace. There was no way she was taking it off. It was definitely part of her past and she was not letting it go. Zechariah saw her hesitation and anger stole across his mild features.

“Natalie. Don’t disappoint me.” He did not hide the annoyance in his voice. It was the same voice he used before whipping or beating her.

Daily Prompt: Government

From The Grey House:

She giggled. “They wanted me to earn my keep. Get this: I told them I was good with computers. They had me watching government sites to make sure no one knew about the camp. Anytime the place was mentioned, I was to erase it. I figured it was better to redirect the government’s searches rather than erase all knowledge. It was a great tool.”

Charlie frowned at turned to her. “How so?”

“I made government watchdogs watch demons, vampires and other critters that were killing humans. They’d take care of the killers and the militia group stayed safe and out of the radar. They weren’t out to hurt anyone, so I didn’t see the harm in helping them. They were sad to see me go.”

Daily Prompt: Cause

From The Grey House:

He had seen the carnage the vampires and werewolves caused freeing Natalia. He was on his way back to the cabin the night they arrived. He stayed back and watched and listened as the Slayers and his friends were easily killed. He couldn’t fight; he didn’t carry a weapon.

Dean looked down at the weapon he now carried and placed it on the ground next to him. He had probably doomed Judith. He could hear people above him on the roof. They were taking Judith. He shuddered. Dean knew what vampires were capable of and didn’t want to think about it too much.

Daily Prompt: Prefer

From The Grey House:

Natalia loved running on the hard-packed sand. She ran barefoot, preferring the feel of the gritty sand to the cushion of a running shoe. She also hated wet shoes, which happened a great deal when running this close to the water’s edge. She liked to run because the feel of the wind against her body, the smell of the salt and seaweed, and the drumming of the surf against the sand helped her to forget her thoughts, and she had so much to forget.

Daily Prompt: Muscle

From The Grey House:

(This comes from one of my favorite scenes in the book. HAD to share lots.)

He stayed where he was, staring at her. “I was rather intrigued to learn you had a job here. My investigation of you didn’t turn that up. But at least now I know another name to look under. Tell me, does Natalie Dovenski have as interesting a past?”

Natalia slammed the door on her emotions and continued onto the deck. She strolled to the table and took her water bottle. She took a drink, screwed the top back on and took it with her to the railing. She rested her back on the banister and regarded Vincent. His face revealed less than hers did. “Natalie Dovenski doesn’t know that things like you exist.” She took another sip of water. “What do you want vampire?”

“Call me by my name. I like hearing it whispering through your lips.” Still no emotion.

A muscle twitched in her jaw as she ground her teeth. “You could have put my things back.”

“I want you to know how much I know about you.” His blue eyes were locked with her dark ones. There seemed to be some humor there. He drummed his fingers together, waiting.

Natalia ground her teeth again, then shut her eyes tight, hiding the anger that clouded them. She opened her eyes and stared at him. “And why would I care?”

“It’s a sad past, checkered with much horror. How old were you when you met your first monster?”

Her anger thickened. Was he making fun of her? “Ten.”

“What kind of monster did you meet?” He was intrigued. He knew about the werewolf she met seven years ago. He did not know about the monster she met at the age of ten.

Her head reeled as if she’d been slapped. A tear slid down her cheek as she remembered her first real monster. Her voice was a whisper. She was surprised he heard. “Human.”

Vincent was not expecting the haunted look. He had expected, wanted, her anger. Passionate anger, always easy to stoke, could be transformed into something far more pleasurable. He had come out here to play. He would have his way. But first, “He’s not the one, though, is he? Not the one who made you a Slayer.”

Her anger came back at the word. “I’m not a Slayer.”

Daily Prompt: Flood

From The Grey House:

After all these years, when she woke up to his voice, the memories of him flooded her mind. They would be working together, possibility living together. It felt odd, but right, that after all this time, she would end up working near the werewolf who pulled her fully into the shadows.
