Daily Prompt: contained

Well, I’m posting MUCH earlier than yesterday, and most days. What got me out of bed early on a Saturday? Waffles. Homemade by my fiance. Bacon Waffles. Nomnomnom!

From Protector of the Grey House:

He carried her out of the library and up the stairs to his bedroom. Once inside, he set her on the bed, locked the door and pulled out his remote to secure the room. He turned back to Natalia as she buttoned her dress. He smiled slightly then went to sit in a chair opposite the bed. She looked around the room as she had never been in here before. It was as big as Vincent’s sitting room, contained a king-sized bed, several dressers, a desk, and several chairs. There were also two wardrobes. She turned her attention back to Joseph.

“You released Anthony tonight?” It was almost a statement.

She nodded. “It was hard. It took a lot out of me.”

“Your will was already weakened.” He leaned forward.

She nodded again. “But I can’t be controlled. My mother assured me of that a long time ago.”

Perimenopause

I go into a bit of detail on this, and it might end up seeming gory, but this is my body and I want to write about what happened, as it’s important to share this information. Most women talk about the horrors of perimenopause, but not the annoyances. You’ll see what I mean if you continue reading.

Last year, my menstrual cycle went wonky. I’ve never been regular, but I was regularly irregular and knew what to expect. Then, last year, I was late one month. This happens once a year, so wasn’t that unexpected. The next month, I had a short period. The month after that, I was two weeks early and a huge clot fell out of me. Larger than normal. By then, I had called my ob/gyn and they said I was probably in perimenopause. I was 45. No, not too young.

The rest of last year seemed to even out and I went back to a more expected interval between periods. I had some hot flashes, but not the horror show I have heard from other women. Mine lasted probably no more than a couple minutes and usually only in the morning while in bed. The worse thing that happened is that my sleep patterns were off the charts. I had insomnia more than usual. Yes, my insomnia had a pattern. Usually, I have insomnia up to twice a month right around my period. Last year it seemed to be happening about once a week or so.

Things went back to normal at the end of last year. I stopped having insomnia as much, hot flashes went away, and my cycle went back to my normal. Then, in January, I had my last normal period. February rolled around and I didn’t have a period. As I didn’t like that, I took a pregnancy test. It had expired, but I used it anyway. I didn’t want to go get one and found out that an expired test may come back with a false negative. But perimenopause can cause false positives…

It came back negative.

During all this I called my ob/gyn. A new one, as the one from last year, who I had seen for a years, retired. (sigh) The new one assured me everything was fine and due to what happened last year, I was probably just showing more signs of perimenopause. I told them about taking the expired pregnancy test and the nurse said it was probably right and I probably didn’t need to take another pregnancy test. As I worry too much about this (as does my fiancé) we bought a new, non-expired test. It too, came back negative (YAY).

So February, no period, March no period and as April rolled in, I was secretly hoping to never have a period ever again. I was REALLY REALLY hoping this was how things would go. Then, April 24th (I have an app where I can track my period), I showed signs of getting my period. I grumbled but prepared for the inevitable.

After a week of basically my body teasing me with spotting, I got my period.

And it hasn’t stopped.

Yeah, you read that right. I’ve had my period for almost a month now. After the first week, I called my ob/gyn and they told me that this is normal and just keep an eye on it. They also told me what to watch for. For those of you who are curious: if I soak through a pad (front to back, side to side where it can be wrung out) for a few hours in a row, then I have to go to the ER.

At this point, though my period has not stopped, it is not an emergency, it’s only an annoyance. The nurse also told me that yes, this happens to a lot of people. When I asked her about it, she said I wasn’t the only person she had talked to that day that had the same issue… so this is “normal”.

Fuck.

I really hope this stops. The thing is, this really is just an inconvenience. I’m not losing enough blood to feel weak (yes, that can happen), it’s just annoying. I also asked my ob/gyn what happens if this lasts until I see her. The answer from the nurse: sorry, we can’t tell you your options without a thorough medical history review. Ok. Fine, but fuck this is just annoying.

The reason I wrote about this is that my entire life no woman or doctor has ever told me that a period could last for a month. I also wasn’t told that things could just be mildly annoying. The women I’ve heard from in the past talk about hot flashes that make them sweat profusely or periods that are heavy and last a couple weeks. I’ve never heard about my experiences. I kind of wonder if the reason women don’t talk about it, other than “it’s taboo”, is that they feel they shouldn’t. Due to things being largely ok for me, I felt that talking about my issues with perimenopause wasn’t worth it, due to the horror stories I’ve heard. I didn’t want to feel like I was “rubbing it in” how easy things were.

So there you go. My experiences so far. And this doesn’t mean things won’t get better or worse, as it’s just starting. Perimenopause usually last four years. Fingers crossed this stays at the annoying level and doesn’t get worse.

Daily Prompt: blows

I woke up very late this morning, which did not allow me time to share anything. Well, at least I have time now! And at least I wasn’t late for work.

From Protector of the Grey House:

After letting Morgan get close for about three minutes, but not actually letting him hit her, Natalia started to feel it. Her thoughts were being picked clean from her mind as Morgan learned her movements and gained confidence. Her tactical side took over as Morgan was allowed to attack her semi-successfully over and over again. Finally, her mind clear of scattered thoughts, she began to show him what she was really made of. Because she allowed him to win for a few minutes, he didn’t give up easily. The calculating warrior took over. She landed more and more blows, making them harder and fiercer and far more precise. Finally, her scattered mind completely consumed by battle adrenaline, she swept him off his feet, swung the staff to his neck and pressed hard against his throat.

“You can’t choke me, human.”

Her eyes narrowed as an evil grin graced her features. “I can still decapitate you. It’ll take some time, but it would make me smile.”

“Natalia.” Vincent’s voice sent shivers down her spine. It was full of the promise of pleasure.

Daily Prompt: dirt

From Protector of the Grey House:

To say the creature was gaunt was an understatement. Its skin clung to it, grey and yellow with age, dirt and dust. There was a smear of something dark across its face. It hissed at Natalia, showing off sharp, long teeth. It was as if the creature’s teeth were all fangs instead of just two. Its arms were bent at the elbow; its hands were bent at the wrist, long claws hanging down. Natalia started to get into a fighting position, but the ghul moved and Natalia found herself facing a wall with the thing behind her. Natalia tried to fight and couldn’t as the creature sank its teeth into her neck. Pain took over and Natalia nearly passed out.

Charlie landed on his feet, seeing nothing but Natalia, who was pressed face first against the wall. Something had its head buried in her neck, as it tried to suck her dry. Its dirt caked body almost hid the fact that it wore no clothes. It grew larger as it drank from Natalia. Charlie raked the creature’s back with his long claws, causing it to pull away from Natalia. The ghul spun around as Charlie attacked. He swiped twice at the thing’s neck, taking off its head. It turned to dust and Charlie roared. The joyous cry stopped short when he saw Natalia’s body slumped on the ground.

Daily Prompt: safety

From Protector of the Grey House:

Anthony regarded Vincent, a slight frown on his face. Vincent’s stoic expression now revealed nothing. “What good does anger ever do me? It clouds my judgement and makes it impossible for me to do my job. Also, I’ve known you a long time, Vincent. It doesn’t really surprise me that you allowed this to happen.”

“You allowed her to hypnotize you.”

Anthony regarded Vincent mildly and kept his voice calm. “And you sat by and let it happen. She gave me my memories back. I heard you laughing in most of those memories. In the end, you were more concerned about her safety than mine. As I stated, you are a bastard.”

Vincent stared intently at Anthony for a moment. “What is your verdict on Natalia? Did she betray me?”

“You heard the same thing I did, Vincent. I find the information and you pass judgement. It’s been this way since we first met.”

Daily Prompt: marble

Vincent placed his hands on her waist, lifted her slightly and sat her on the counter. It was marble and well built. They had used it before. He nuzzled her neck, and wondered if he could take her blood, or if she had lost too much to Wayne. “None of the women I’ve loved have ever been as stubborn as you. Or as incredibly frustrating.”

Natalia’s mind stopped as his words seeped into her brain. It was the closest he had come to saying he loved her. She had never expected to hear it. Since her declaration two years ago, she hadn’t repeated her words. It wasn’t necessary. She closed her eyes. “Have any of the women you’ve loved been like me?”

“You remind me of Lorraine, and Mierka. You are more dominating then Mierka, and far more adventurous than Lorraine. And you never back down.” He listened to her heart, to try and to hear her heartbeats, as he wanted to assess her blood loss. Her heartbeats were quick though, as always when he touched her. Aggravated, he bared his fangs, and pressed the points into her flesh. He dented but did not break her skin. She would let him know if he couldn’t feed off her.

Natalia placed her hands on his chest, and pushed him away him lightly. They had to finish their business. “What do we do with Anthony?”

Daily Prompt: spine

From Protector of the Grey House:

“No more secrets. Tell him all.”

Her mouth dropped open. “All?”

Anthony felt chills run down his spine. He did not like this conversation, but wasn’t sure why.

Vincent looked to Anthony, then to Natalia. “All.”

She nodded, stood taller, and walked with confidence into Vincent’s study. Anthony spared Vincent one last look before he followed Natalia into the study and closed the door. Sequestered in the comfortable room, the two looked each other up and down. Anthony placed his back against the door and watched as Natalia moved to the window. She moved the curtain out of the way and stared into the darkness.

“I’m here to listen.” He said after a few moments of silence.

“Do you remember how we met?”

He frowned. “Not particularly.”

“We met at The Red Thread. The day I was there as a distraction as Slayers cased the club.”

“I feel as if you’re trying to distract me.”

Daily Prompt: club

Part of new stuff I re-wrote this month to make the novel better. I have grown a lot as a person since I first wrote this trilogy in 2005-2006. I feel the changes make the book far better. Of course most of you will never now what was changed. But hey, take my word for it, it is better.

From Protector of the Grey House:

She shook her head. “No, this is part of the last few days.” She turned to regard him as she leaned against the wall by the window. She crossed her arms. “I found my way into the private area. I wanted information on Vincent and knew he spent his time there while in the club. I spoke to many people, including you.”

As she spoke as he shook his head. “You weren’t that memorable.”

She gave a short, almost inaudible laugh. “I hypnotized you.”

He stared at her as the news sank into his mind. He shook his head once, and tried to continue the conversation. “What does that have to do with anything?”

“Do you believe me?”

“I’m not sure I do.”

Daily Prompt: asked

From the new part (written this past month), of the novel.

From Protector of the Grey House:

“Enough!” Those in the foyer looked to Anthony. Anthony looked to Vincent. “I was asked here to reveal a betrayer. I mean to complete my task.” He looked to Natalia. “I will start with your story. Please come with me. I believe Vincent’s study will do for an interrogation room.”

“Natalia!” His voice echoed throughout the house; his anger palpable.

Natalia stopped her forward motion toward Anthony, and she looked at Vincent. “Yes?”

“No more secrets. Tell him all.”

Her mouth dropped open. “All?”

Anthony felt chills run down his spine. He did not like this conversation, but wasn’t sure why.

Daily Prompt: choice

From Protector of the Grey House:

“You think you’re too good to be a vampire?”

“Never said that.” Natalia circled with Lorraine, glad for the moment to assess her target and allow for tactics. She already knew of two things she could try, one if she were quick enough, which she wasn’t, and one she would do if she were desperate, which she was.

“So why not allow him to change you?” Lorraine continued to circle slowly.

“He will. When I’m ready.” She readied herself for her opportunity, which would present itself shortly.

“Has anyone informed you it isn’t your choice?”

“Interesting thing about me, I usually don’t listen to nonsense like that.”
