Daily Prompt: corpse

From Protector of the Grey House:

The man screamed through Vincent’s hand, but the sounded didn’t carry. In seconds, Vincent had his mouth wrapped around the man’s neck, his teeth buried deep in the human’s flesh. He ripped open the jugular and drank the coppery liquid that bled free. The man didn’t have time to struggle before all his blood was gone. Vincent pulled back from the corpse and dropped it to the ground.

“Did that satisfy you?” Lorraine’s voice called softly from the shadows.

Vincent turned and watched as she slipped out of the trees. She was dressed in a white see through negligée. He growled and was on her before she could say another word. Lorraine caught him in her arms and held on tight as he thrust her up against a tree. He growled and showed off bloody teeth.

Daily Prompt: state

This is a little late today due to lack of sleep, which led to MS issues… some days, I lose the fight. And I’m ok with that. I hope you are all doing well. Thank you for following along with my writing journey and reading the passages of my book.

From Protector of the Grey House:

Annoyed, Vincent nevertheless stopped and took a breath. He felt as his lungs took in air, then released it. When he did not immediately feel anger or any residual animal hunger, he turned to Lorraine. “I’m fine.”

She believed him, to a degree. When he was in this state, he often overlooked how he felt until it was too late. He had release some of his frustrations though, therefore she nodded. “Fine, but do you really want to leave yet?”

“I have things to take care of at home.”

She nodded. “Would you like to take a few minutes to freshen up before your flight?”

“I wish to leave.”

Lorraine didn’t like the short answers, but knew she could do nothing about it. She nodded. “Let me know if there is anything more you need.”

Vincent nodded, gathered the rest of his clothes, and left the room. Lorraine shook her head, then went to her office to call Joseph. She felt it best to inform the man of Vincent’s state of mind.

Daily Prompt: habits

From Protector of the Grey House:

“This time, you placed this house and the people in it in grave danger. Though you are not a Slayer, you are well trained. You have been trained by vampires and, though you may not realize it yet, are skilled enough to kill us all. You know our habits, you know our lives, you know our strengths and weaknesses.” He reached out and placed his hand around her new pendant with a gentle hand.

Natalia’s breath hitched and something changed in her look. Internally, Joseph felt relief. Externally, he showed no reaction. “He gave you rank, human. Rank. I saw your thoughts when he placed this around your neck. You did not think you deserved this. After your actions today, I have to concur.”

During his speech, Joseph carried the human into the newly opened cell. He held her out over the oubliette, his arm outstretched. He stood still and gave her a cold, hard look.

Daily Prompt: bar

From Protector of the Grey House:

Natalia found Mierka upstairs, in the darkest corner of the bar. She sat on the couch, her arms spread out on the back, waiting. Mierka smiled as Natalia approached and licked her lips slowly. Natalia sat down on the couch close to the vampire and sighed. Mierka leaned in and whispered into her ear.

“Why the hesitation?”

Her voice eased Natalia’s nerves; she placed her hand on Mierka’s thigh, almost grateful the woman wore jeans and not a skirt. She sighed and pulled away to look into Mierka’s eyes. When Natalia felt nothing but her own thoughts, she knew she was no longer under the vampire’s control.

“I didn’t realize I was bi-sexual until you suggested we try this. Tonight has brought out a lot of odd feelings.”

Mierka looked deep into Natalia’s eyes, and carefully brushed her fingers under the human’s chin. “Say no and we leave.”

Daily Prompt: nerves

From Protector of the Grey House:

Natalia continued to back up as she wracked her memory for the demon’s weak spot. It was something obvious, but she couldn’t remember. She slowed her breath to calm her nerves and give herself time to think. It’s movements were unhurried. It bellowed and threatened but didn’t attack as if assessing her strengths. Natalia backed up again. She danced out of its way as it swung and realized her mistake. She had forgotten where she left her shoes, stepped on one of them, and almost stumbled to the ground. Rebecca caught her and pulled her to the right as a dark brown form leapt from her left and hurled itself at the advancing demon.

Natalia yelled a warning too late. The Blitzkrieg howled in the same instant as it landed on the deadly creature. The Blitzkrieg’s foot long claws broke in succession; ten dry twigs under the pressure of a heavy boot.  The bits of glass and metal sank deep into the pads of his feet and flesh of his hands. The wolf still flung its mouth open and tried to sink its teeth into the demon’s nonexistent flesh. The wolf gave a mangled howl as his snout, gums and tongue were ripped into ribbons. The demon brought its glass hands up almost leisurely as the wolf tried to pry his teeth off the demon. As the wolf continued to struggle, the demon wrapped its deadly hands around the Blitzkrieg’s throat and started to squeeze.

Daily Prompt: conversation

From Protector of the Grey House:

At the doors to the training room, Vincent regarded the creatures present. Most of the assembled were vampires loyal to him. There were more in the area than Edwin knew of. He had brought in vampires from all over the world that wanted to see the monster dead and out of power. There were about twenty vampires present, all of whom knew about the strange attraction between Vincent and the human. Vincent sought out his human, not surprised to see her with the werewolves. She stood at the back of the room against the wall and spoke with Rebecca. Both women looked happy to see each other. Charlie, to the other side of Rebecca, looked even happier. He had his arm around his wife and grinned from ear to ear. Vincent stepped into the room, and went right to Joseph, who stood near Anthony. Vincent whispered to Joseph, then pulled away, and went to the front wall to wait.

Natalia watched her lover come into the room and wondered at the look on his face. It was a surprise to see all the people present. Natalia went straight to Rebecca, as she knew she could ignore the rest of the room if she spoke with her friend. As Vincent caught her eye, she felt the peace that had crept over her while she talked to Rebecca try and slip away. She held onto it. If the feeling left, her stress and headache would return. She took a deep breath and continued her conversation with Rebecca. The Alpha wolf was explaining how the dynamics of her family worked. It seemed that due to the pact they made with Vincent, it was easier for Rebecca’s parents to raise the twins. Rebecca’s grandfather raised her and her brother. They continued the conversation as Natalia tried to ignore the look on her man’s face.

Daily Prompt: play

I rewrote a large few chunks of this book. I’m glad I did. This scene is one of them. I like how Mierka and Joseph interact with each other and how they pretty much do as they please regarding Vincent.

From Protector of the Grey House:

“You play a risky game.”

She smirked and shrugged. The conversation thus far had been calm as if the two lovers were discussing a trivial matter and not their boss staked and incapacitated. “I have played this game before. I know the risks.” She looked Joseph up and down. “And you? What are you up to?”

“Anthony has agreed to take the ring and destroy it.”

Her eyes opened wide. She looked to Vincent, then back to Joseph. “He doesn’t want that.”

“Natalia is under its spell. Our benefactor is currently not in his right mind. He doesn’t have a say in this.”

She gave a short laugh. “You play a dangerous game as well, love.

Joseph shrugged, went to the cabinets, and took the ring. “I refuse to allow this dangerous item to continue to try and entice that woman. She will not be our deaths.” With the ring in hand, Joseph turned to look at Mierka. She had an odd look in her eyes. “Yes?”

She held his gaze. “Her death should be in our hands.”

“It will be in his hands if all goes as they want.”

Daily Prompt: hope

The word “hope” may be in this paragraph too often.

From Protector of the Grey House:

Charlie changed back to human before he touched Natalia. He saw the blood on her back and hissed in sympathy. The wounds on her neck and back bled freely. He had scratched her up in his haste to kill the creature. Natalia was out cold, perhaps thankfully. Charlie ripped her shirt up more than it was and hurriedly pressed a makeshift bandage to her neck. The blood held it in place, and he turned into wolf form. Charlie did his best to lick her wounds clean, changed back to human and used the rest of her ripped shirt as a bandage for her back. It was too dark to know if he had done a good enough job, and the place reeked of death and decay. He worried about infection, but there was nothing he could do.

Charlie gathered her in his arms, and wondered how the hell he would be able to get her out of here. He looked up and knew, beyond doubt, there was no way out. He sighed, settled himself comfortably against the wall and cradled Natalia. He had to wait for help, and would keep his hand over her neck bite to staunch the bleeding. It was the worst wound. Rebecca knew where he was. It was a small hope, but it was hope. He learned long ago, that when it came to Rebecca, he could hope without worry. She would find him. He sighed again, kissed the top of Natalia’s head and started the long process of waiting.

Daily Prompt: pilots

From Protector of the Grey House:

“So the feeling I have that she’s hurt…”

“Probably means she is.” Her voice was soft but panicked.

The vampire stood. “Get dressed. We leave soon, and you’ll be needed.”

Vincent shouted for Joseph as he left the room. Diana kissed her woman goodbye and readied herself for the early departure. Joseph, who once again anticipated Vincent’s mind, was on Lorraine’s phone. He informed their pilot of the early departure. Lorraine stood by him, dressed in a light summer dress, and spoke with Rowland and Maxine. Anthony had already gathered the others from House LeGris.

They were out the door, headed to Lorraine’s airstrip in less than half an hour. They were in the air fifteen minutes after that. Joseph made sure Diana sat in the cockpit with the pilots to make sure she was out of the way. Vincent paced the length of the airplane, which made the others nervous. Lorraine, who had come along for support, tried several times to calm him down, but nothing worked. Rowland and Maxine also came along just in case reinforcements were necessary. Two hours into the flight, Joseph grabbed Vincent by the arm and forced him into the separate bedroom at the end of the plane.

Daily Prompt: cowering

From Protector of the Grey House:

She went Blitzkrieg, tore down the steps, and bellowed her wrath. There were more shots fired, which just fueled the woman’s passion. Mangled screams emanated from the dungeon, cut short by vampires dying. Less than a minute later Rebecca yelled up the stairs.

“Edwin’s yours, sir. He’s cowering at the top of the oubliette.”

Vincent was down the steps so quickly Ben and Anthony hardly saw him. When he passed a near naked Rebecca, he was no more than wind. Edwin fired at him to no avail. The ex-Captain was pressed against the wall before he could fire more than two shots. He screamed in pain as Vincent ripped off the hand holding the gun.

“It would pleasure me greatly to kill you now, but I will follow the rules and kill you in front of an audience.”

“You kill me; you’ll never find your bitch.”

“Vincent? VINCENT!” A familiar voice rang from the oubliette. In all the years Vincent had known the werewolf, this was the first time Charlie sounded happy to hear his boss’s voice.

Rebecca, ran to the edge of the hole, and leaned over as far as she dared. Relief flooded her very being. “Charlie!” Her voice turned upset. “I’m going to kick your ass when you get up here! Don’t you dare to that again!”
